5.1-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes South Sandwich Islands

South sandwich islands: A 5.1 magnitude earthquake struck the South Sandwich Islands, a British Overseas Territory in the South Atlantic Ocean.

According to Qatar News Agency, the US Geological Survey said that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 135.7 kilometers. The South Sandwich Islands are accustomed to frequent seismic and volcanic activity due to their location at the intersection of the South American and Antarctic tectonic plates.

In August 2021, the region experienced a powerful earthquake exceeding magnitude 8.0. Despite the significant magnitude of that quake, no casualties or damage were reported, largely due to the islands' lack of population.
