Algeria and Italy on Wednesday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in the field of electricity exports to Europe. The Algerian energy group Sonatrach said that the MoU was signed in partnership between Sonatrach, the Algerian electricity and gas group Sonelgaz, and the Italian energy company Eni. Sonatrach noted that this protocol will allow the three parties to conduct joint feasibility studies for an electrical interconnection project between the Algerian and Italian electricity networks, through the construction of a submarine cable, with the aim of exchanging or supplying the Italian and European markets with electricity. The statement added that the project will be the first of its kind, and will allow the creation of an energy center linking Algeria to Europe. The MoU signed today reinforces the existing cooperation between Sonatrach and Eni within the framework of the two strategic intent protocols signed in Algiers on Jan. 23, 2023, which aimed to define future joint projects related to ene rgy supply, energy transition, and decarbonization.
