Beijing: Researchers from Sichuan University and Shenzhen University in China have successfully integrated the interconnected effects of multiple factors in real marine environments into a research system for producing hydrogen from seawater, thus expanding the understanding of microscopic reaction mechanisms to large-scale engineering applications.

According to Qatar News Agency, direct electrolysis of seawater can be used to produce hydrogen from seawater and for marine renewable energy. However, the complexity of seawater composition and dynamics, such as compositional fluctuations, wind and wave turbulence, and salt spray erosion, have hindered the transition from laboratory experiments to industrial-scale applications.

This study systematically reviewed the key microscopic mechanisms of direct electrolysis of seawater and critically analyzed the applicability and limitations of various large-scale engineering application approaches.

The study established, for the first time, a standard for linking microscopic reaction mechanisms to macroscopic system processes, bridging a research gap in this field where fundamental insights at the microscopic level have been disconnected from practical engineering applications.
