Brussels: The European Union's Copernicus Climate Observatory announced that August was the warmest month on record globally, and that summer in Western Europe was the warmest since records began. Global air temperatures in August averaged 16.96 degrees Celsius, surpassing by 0.01 degrees the previous record set in July 2023, and Western Europe experienced the hottest summers on record, the Observatory said.

According to Qatar News Agency, 'August 2026 was a remarkable month in the global climate record,' said Deputy Director of the Copernicus Climate Change Service at the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) Samantha Burgess. She added, "Humans haven't seen temperatures as hot as today for, arguably, at least the last 100,000 years."

The Copernicus Observatory reported that the period from June to August is also the hottest on record in the world, equal to 2024, the day after the US Meteorological Agency announced the recording of the hottest summer in the country since observations began more than 130 years ago.
