Greece Warns Heatwave Risks Wildfires

Doha: The civil protection authorities in Greece issued a warning today about extremely high risks of wildfires in several areas at the start of this week, due to an intense heatwave and strong winds. The authorities said that a government-issued risk map showed parts of the island of Evia, as well as the southern and eastern regions of the Peloponnese Peninsula and the area surrounding the capital Athens, marked in dark red, indicating the highest level of danger.

According to Qatar News Agency, the island of Crete, the western parts of the Peloponnese, and several eastern Aegean islands are also facing extremely high wildfire risks. An orange alert, the second-highest warning level in the country, has been issued for those areas.

Greece has experienced a severe heatwave in recent days, with temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius. This has caused intense drought, and strong winds have increased the likelihood of large-scale wildfires.
