Libya Signs Draft Deal to Resolve Political Crisis

Doha: The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) announced on Thursday that Libyan parties had initialed a draft final agreement aimed at resolving the political crisis and unifying the government and institutions capable of leading the country toward elections.

According to Qatar News Agency, the development came at the conclusion of a mini-meeting organized by UNSMIL in the Tunisian capital. This meeting focused on discussions related to completing the first two steps of the roadmap proposed by the UN mission.

UNSMIL stated that the meeting participants agreed to reconvene in Libya before the end of August. This future meeting aims to establish arrangements for implementing the agreement and to officially announce it.

Libya was initially scheduled to hold presidential and parliamentary elections in December 2021. However, these elections were postponed indefinitely due to disagreements among the political factions.
