New york: A woman was killed, and a man was injured in a stabbing attack in New York City's busy Times Square on Monday, before police shot and killed the female suspect, authorities said.

According to Qatar News Agency, the 49-year-old suspect, a Queens resident, randomly stabbed two people with two knives in what New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch described as an "unprovoked" attack. Authorities said there was no indication that the incident was terrorism-related.

Police said the suspect first stabbed a 68-year-old man in the abdomen near West 41st Street and Seventh Avenue. About 20 seconds later, she stabbed a 32-year-old woman in the abdomen. Both victims were taken to Bellevue Hospital, where the woman later died from her injuries. The man remained hospitalized in stable condition.

The suspect then moved toward an NYPD substation near One Times Square, where officers confronted her and repeatedly ordered her to drop the knives. Police attempted to subdue her with a Taser, but the effort was unsuccessful. She then advanced toward the officers while still holding the knives, prompting two officers to open fire, police said.

The suspect was taken to Bellevue Hospital in critical condition and later died from her injuries.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said the police shooting would be investigated, as is standard in officer-involved shootings, while authorities continue to investigate the circumstances and motive behind the stabbing attack.
