Doha: In a series of recent editorials, Qatari newspapers have highlighted significant strides in promoting the rights of persons with disabilities and enhancing worker protection within the country. Al Sharq and The Peninsula have both underscored Qatar's dedication to these causes, while Al Arab has focused on labor rights and safety.
According to Qatar News Agency, Al Sharq's editorial titled "Qatar and the rights of persons with disabilities" emphasized Qatar's adherence to its international obligations under Article 35 of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. This commitment was demonstrated by HE Minister of State for International Cooperation Dr. Maryam bint Ali bin Nasser Al Misnad's participation in an interactive dialogue with the UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in Geneva. The discussions addressed legislative and institutional developments and highlighted the measures taken to promote equality, non-discrimination, accessibility, and participation in various aspects of life for persons with disabilities.
The Peninsula, in its editorial "From care to inclusion," pointed to Qatar's evolving approach to disability rights. The editorial noted a significant shift from merely providing services to ensuring full, independent, and equal participation for people with disabilities in everyday life. This shift was encapsulated by Dr. Al Misnad during the Geneva dialogue, marking a transformation from care to empowerment. The editorial also highlighted the importance of Law No. (22) of 2025, which strengthens protections and recognizes the denial of reasonable accommodation as discrimination, moving disability rights into a rights-based framework.
Al Arab, through its editorial "A legal umbrella," focused on Qatar's efforts to protect workers and enhance labor market compliance. It highlighted the annual enforcement of a ministerial decision that protects workers from heat stress between June 1 and September 15. This decision allows workers to stop work during peak heat hours and file complaints if conditions are unsafe, with a strict prohibition on retaliation against those exercising this right. The editorial praised the dedication of authorities, including Ashghal, in implementing these protective measures.
