Russia Conducts First Ever FM Radio Broadcast from Arctic

Russian tech company 'ruvds' announced successfully conducting the first ever radio broadcast from an altitude exceeding 30 kilometers directly above the arctic circle. the broadcast:hort-wave (FM) waves, was received by standard radio receivers.

According to Qatar News Agency, the company explained that it conducted a test launch of the broadcast from stratospheric platforms at high latitudes in the Arctic, and the signal was received by home UHF radio receivers. The stratospheric platform was equipped with a specialized transmitter, and the project faced engineering and logistical challenges until it successfully achieved its objectives, with the public able to listen to the broadcast.

RUVDS's director-general, Nikita Tsaplin, explained that the technology tested could potentially provide satellite radio coverage across all of Russia in the future. He added that broadcasting from this region, under challenging conditions, was a first in history.

The data collected by the experimental multispectral sensors and cameras on the stratospheric platform will be used to assess climate change, track marine mammal populations, and monitor conditions along the Northern Sea Route.
