Erbil: The Counter-Terrorism Service in Iraq's Kurdistan Region announced today that forces of the US-led international coalition against ISIS had thwarted attacks involving explosive-laden drones over the northern Iraqi city of Erbil.
According to Qatar News Agency, coalition forces successfully shot down three explosive-laden drones, and fortunately, no casualties were reported. Earlier today, an Iraqi security source revealed that air defense systems had intercepted several drones over Erbil, resulting in debris falling near a residential complex close to Erbil International Airport.
The source further noted that while there were no casualties from the incident, one vehicle did incur material damage from the falling debris. Security authorities are actively investigating to ascertain the origin of the drones and identify the party responsible for launching them.
Earlier this week, Iraqi authorities disclosed they had dismantled a network that was preparing to carry out a drone attack, arresting its members before the plot could be executed.
