Qatar Advocates for Diplomacy in Middle East Conflicts at UN Security Council

New York:The State of Qatar has emphasized the need for diplomatic efforts to address the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, cautioning that ongoing tensions and restrictions on crucial maritime routes pose a threat to regional stability and the global economy. During an open debate of the United Nations Security Council focusing on the Middle East, including the Palestinian question, Her Excellency Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani, Qatar's Permanent Representative to the UN, highlighted the importance of adhering to international law and peaceful solutions as the pathway to lasting peace.

According to Qatar News Agency, Qatar remains committed to its diplomatic initiatives to foster peace and security on both regional and international levels. The debate occurred amid heightened regional tensions since February 28, which Sheikha Alya noted have impacted security and development in the area.

Qatar condemned Iranian actions infringing upon its sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as similar actions against other countries in the region. It urged full compliance with UN Security Council Resolution 2817, passed in March. Sheikha Alya underscored the necessity of safeguarding freedom of navigation under international law, especially through vital maritime routes. She criticized using the Strait of Hormuz for political leverage and demanded its unconditional reopening, asserting that freedom of navigation through this strategic channel is a non-negotiable principle.

Sheikha Alya also addressed Qatar's ongoing mediation between the United States and Iran to bridge differences and establish mutual understanding, while also supporting Pakistan's mediation efforts. Additionally, she condemned Houthi attacks on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, which resulted in casualties and damage, affirming Qatar's solidarity with Saudi Arabia's right to protect its sovereignty.

The Palestinian issue remains central to achieving peace in the Middle East, with Qatar collaborating with Egypt, the United States, and Turkiye in efforts that led to a ceasefire in Gaza. Sheikha Alya called for the full implementation of a comprehensive plan endorsed by Security Council Resolution 2803, proposed by US President Donald Trump, to address the humanitarian crisis and advance peace prospects.

Qatar reiterated its opposition to any actions aimed at displacing Palestinians or altering the character of occupied territories, condemning Israeli settlement policies and incursions into Al-Aqsa Mosque. It reaffirmed its support for an independent Palestinian state based on 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.

In addition, Qatar expressed support for Syria's sovereignty and welcomed the US decision to remove Syria's designation as a state sponsor of terrorism. Sheikha Alya condemned Israeli violations in Syrian territory and called for international compliance with relevant resolutions.

On Lebanon, Qatar supported the nation's sovereignty and rejected Israeli annexation claims over southern Lebanon, urging the international community to ensure Israel's adherence to UN Security Council Resolution 1701.
