Doha: QatarEnergy signed an agreement with Samsung C and T’s Engineering and Construction Group for the construction of a world-scale solar power plant in Dukhan, about 80 kilometers west of Doha.

According to Qatar News Agency, the Dukhan solar power plant will be developed in two phases, reaching a total electricity generation capacity of 2,000 megawatts (MW) by mid-2029. Once completed, it will double Qatar’s solar power production capacity, contributing significantly to the country’s renewable energy goals.

The agreement was signed by HE Minister of State for Energy Affairs and President and CEO of QatarEnergy Eng. Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi and President and CEO of Samsung C and T Sechul Oh during a ceremony at QatarEnergy’s headquarters in Doha. The event was also attended by HE President of Kahramaa Abdulla bin Ali Al-Theyab and senior executives from both companies.

HE Minister Al-Kaabi remarked that the agreement marks an important milestone in balancing economic and social development with environmental protection, aligning with Qatar National Vision 2030. It supports QatarEnergy’s Sustainability Strategy, aiming to generate more than 4,000 megawatts of renewable energy by 2030.

He further stated that the Dukhan solar power plant, together with Al-Kharsaah, Mesaieed, and Ras Laffan solar power plants, will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 4.7 million tons annually, contributing up to 30% of Qatar’s total peak electricity demand. The collaboration with Samsung C and T is expected to play a crucial role in achieving this vision.

The Dukhan solar power plant will commence its first phase of production by dispatching 1,000 MW of power to the KAHRAMAA grid by the end of 2028. The new plant will utilize a solar tracker system and enhance efficiency with inverters capable of operating in high-temperature environments.
