Doha: In their editorials on Sunday, Qatari newspapers highlighted several prominent issues across various sectors. Foremost among these was the ongoing consultation and intensive communication between HE Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani and officials in the region.
According to Qatar News Agency, the newspapers also highlighted the two identical letters sent to HE United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and HE Permanent Representative of the French Republic to the UN Jerome Bonnafont, who is holding the rotating presidency of the Security Council, which expose the falsehood of Iranian claims.
On the domestic front, the newspapers underscored the importance of the continuous qualitative developments in Qatar's education sector.
In its editorial, Al-Sharq newspaper said that HE Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani is conducting continuous communications with officials in the region to strengthen joint coordination. The most recent of these communications was a telephone call on Saturday between His Excellency and HE Prime Minister of the Republic of Lebanon Dr. Nawaf Salam. During the call, His Excellency and his Lebanese counterpart reviewed bilateral relations and ways to support and strengthen them, as well as the latest regional developments, particularly the diplomatic efforts and joint coordination aimed at reducing tensions and enhancing security and stability in the region.
The newspaper noted that HE the Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs affirmed during the call Qatar's support for all diplomatic efforts and endeavors aimed at a solution that guarantees freedom of navigation and paves the way for reaching a comprehensive agreement that achieves lasting peace in the region. Al-Sharq newspaper noted that His Excellency reiterated the State of Qatar's firm and unwavering support for Lebanon's stability and territorial integrity, and its continued solidarity with the Lebanese people.
The newspaper concluded its editorial by stressing that Qatar believes that regional crises can be addressed through dialogue and by giving diplomacy a genuine opportunity to contain tensions and address the root causes of crises, thereby ensuring security, stability, and lasting peace in the region.
For its part, Al-Arab said that the identical letters sent by the State of Qatar to the Secretary-General of the United Nations and the President of the Security Council clarified matters and exposed the falsehood of Iranian claims once again. These letters are not merely a routine diplomatic response, but rather a testament to truth and a firmly established legal document confirming that the State of Qatar stands on solid ground of international law, while Tehran attempts to distort the facts and evade its responsibility.
It added that the State of Qatar has clearly and unequivocally affirmed that the Iranian attacks that began on Feb. 28, 2026, against its territory, territorial waters, and commercial vessels, constitute a flagrant violation of Article 2(4) of the United Nations Charter and a violation of the definition of aggression adopted by the General Assembly in its resolution 3314. The missile and drone attacks on its territory, the attempt to close the Strait of Hormuz, and the targeting of civilian infrastructure are not self-defense, as Iran claims, but rather full-fledged acts of aggression. Most importantly, the Security Council itself, in its resolution 2817 (2026), condemned these attacks in the strongest terms and considered them a serious threat to international peace and security.
Regarding the Strait of Hormuz, Qatar affirmed that Iran's attempt to use the Strait as a bargaining chip or a pretext for threatening commercial vessels is a failed attempt to legitimize illegal actions. Resolution 2817 itself condemned any threat to close the Strait or disrupt navigation through it.
The newspaper concluded its editorial by stressing that the State of Qatar defends its sovereignty, security, and national interests by all legitimate means, including the right to self-defense under Article 51 of the Charter. At the same time, it is a State of mediation and peace, which has never abandoned its diplomatic efforts despite all provocations.
