Spanish Researchers Develop Iron-Based MRI Agent for Heart Fibrosis Detection

Madrid:Spanish researchers have announced the development of a novel iron-based agent designed for use in MRI scans, which has shown promise in detecting heart tissue fibrosis and potentially limiting its progression during laboratory tests.

According to Qatar News Agency, the new material was created by a team at CIC biomaGUNE in collaboration with partner institutions. It consists of 1.4-nanometer iron nanoparticles enveloped by specially designed proteins.

Tests conducted revealed that these nanoparticles tend to accumulate in fibrotic heart tissue, enhancing MRI signals as the fibrosis becomes more pronounced. Further experiments on lab-grown human heart tissue indicated a reduction in collagen production and accumulation, as well as decreased tissue stiffness.

These findings suggest that the developed material could pave the way for innovative methods to detect and monitor heart fibrosis. However, researchers emphasize that additional studies are necessary to confirm the safety and effectiveness of this new MRI agent in patients.
