UN Highlights Severe Humanitarian Crisis in Sudan Affecting 15 Million

Khartoum:The United Nations has issued a warning that approximately 15.4 million people in Sudan are in desperate need of emergency shelter and essential household items. This includes millions who have opted to return to their original areas amidst the ongoing conflict.

According to Qatar News Agency, the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) have issued a joint statement highlighting the intensifying civilian suffering as a result of the conflict in Sudan, which has persisted for over three and a half years. The shifting front lines have compelled more families to flee, leaving many without adequate shelter and facing a significant funding shortfall.

The two organizations further elaborated that due to financial constraints, humanitarian agencies can only prioritize aid for 10 percent of those in need. This situation has created a substantial gap between the increasing needs and the available resources to address them.

Deputy Representative of UNHCR in Sudan, Abubakarr Jalloh, informed reporters that women and children constitute three out of every four displaced individuals in the country. He also mentioned that the El Nino phenomenon has resulted in significantly reduced rainfall in Sudan this year, adversely affecting harvests across regions such as Darfur and Kordofan, which are already suffering due to ongoing conflicts.

Despite Sudan experiencing the world's largest displacement crisis, its 2026 Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan has only received 47 percent of the required US$2.9 billion funding.
