Doha: A 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck off the east coast of Japan's Honshu island Saturday, according to the German Research Centre for Geosciences. The quake's epicenter was 78 kilometers (48 miles) deep, the center said in a statement.

According to Qatar News Agency, there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage from the quake, and no tsunami warning was issued. A previous 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck Kumamoto Prefecture in southwestern Japan in July, leaving dozens dead and injured.

Japan is frequently hit by earthquakes and tremors because it sits along the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region known for intense seismic activity.
