Islamabad: A 5.4-magnitude earthquake struck Tuesday in the capital, Islamabad, and northern Pakistan.
According to Qatar News Agency, the Pakistan Meteorological Department reported that the earthquake affected the capital and northern regions, including the districts of Swat, Peshawar, Abbottabad, and Mansehra. The epicenter of the earthquake was identified as being in southeastern Afghanistan, which borders Pakistan.
There have been no reports of casualties or damage from the earthquake so far. An earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale also struck eastern Afghanistan today.
Earthquakes are common in Pakistan due to its location on the boundary of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. A devastating 7.6-magnitude earthquake in 2005 resulted in the deaths of thousands in Pakistan.
