Iran-Oman Hormuz Deal Crucial for Reviving US-Iran Talks: Qatar

Doha: Qatar, a key mediator in the stalled US-Iran talks, has stated that an agreement between Iran and Oman regarding the strategic Strait of Hormuz is essential for resuming negotiations aimed at ending the conflict in the Middle East. The strait, a critical passageway that facilitates the transport of one-fifth of the world's LNG and oil during peacetime, was effectively shut by Tehran following the outbreak of war with the United States in late February.

According to TRTworld.com, Iran and Oman have been engaged in discussions for weeks concerning the future navigation of the waterway. Tehran has indicated that both nations have reached an agreement on the geographical coordinates of the route. Qatari foreign ministry spokesperson Majed Al Ansari highlighted the significance of a potential agreement, stating, "We are also awaiting an agreement between the Sultanate of Oman and Iran regarding the Strait, which would enable us to return to the framework of negotiations."

Al Ansari further emphasized that reaching an agreement over the Strait of Hormuz would significantly facilitate the resumption of talks between the United States and Iran. A memorandum of understanding signed in June between Iran and Oman had previously collapsed due to disagreements over the management of the strait.

On Tuesday, Iran's top negotiator, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, declared that the strategic waterway would remain closed until the United States met Tehran's demands, which include lifting a naval blockade. Meanwhile, Iran has signaled that talks are continuing in a serious manner, with ongoing exchanges on a joint statement's text.

Tehran has also mandated vessels to obtain permission and pay transit service fees, a move opposed by Washington and several regional countries. Iran has been targeting vessels attempting to transit the strait without proper authorization. In a related development, US President Donald Trump issued a warning, threatening to bomb Oman if it obstructs a deal with Iran concerning the Strait of Hormuz, while urging Tehran to capitulate in the ongoing conflict that has become increasingly burdensome politically at home.
